Yesterday, Apple unveiled macOS 26 Tahoe, a major update to the operating system for Macs. Many current models will receive it, but for some it will be the last.

Here's What We Know

At the Platforms State of the Union event at WWDC25, Apple announced that macOS 26 Tahoe will be the last major update for a number of Intel-based Mac models. Thus, from 2026, only computers with Apple Silicon chips will receive major updates.

Macs that will receive macOS 26:

  • MacBook Air with Apple M1 chip and newer
  • MacBook Pro with Apple M1 chip and newer
  • MacBook Pro 16" (2019)
  • MacBook Pro 13" (2020, with four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
  • iMac (2020 and newer)
  • Mac mini (2020 and later)
  • Mac Studio (2022 and later)
  • Mac Pro (2019 and later)

As a reminder, Apple stopped making Intel-powered Macs in 2020 and switched entirely to Apple's own Silicon processors.

After the release of macOS 26 Tahoe, these Macs will continue to receive critical security updates for a few years, but there will be no new features.
