An F-15E fighter jet from the US Air Force is being tested with new small missiles to counter drones and enemy cruise missiles.

Here's What We Know

During the test flight from Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, the F-15E fighter-bomber was equipped with six launchers carrying APKWS II missiles, a precision-guided 70mm munition that converts conventional unguided Hydra missiles into guided ones. Each unit carries seven missiles, bringing the total payload to 42.

In addition, the F-15E retains the ability to carry up to eight air-to-air missiles at a time, making it an effective tool for combating a variety of air threats. Due to its large payload and range, the Strike Eagle is able to stay in the combat zone longer, covering larger patrol areas.

The updated APKWS II missiles, which are being developed by BAE Systems, now have an infrared sensor that allows them to be guided independently on the heat signature of targets after the initial laser illumination. This increases their effectiveness against fast and agile targets such as kamikaze drones and cruise missiles.

The system has already proven its effectiveness in practice. In March 2025, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) released a video of the combat use of APKWS II missiles on F-16s during the interception of Houthi drones in Yemen.
