The situation around TikTok in the US is in limbo and has calmed down somewhat thanks to Trump's involvement, but Europe has taken up the cause of the popular social network.

Here's What We Know

The European Union's data privacy watchdog has fined TikTok €530mn/$600mn.

The reason for this decision was the results of a four-year investigation, which confirmed the fact of collecting and transferring personal data of the application's users to China, which is a gross violation of EU privacy rules.

In addition, the Irish Data Protection Commission, which is TikTok's main regulator in the EU, accused the company of lacking transparency about where the data was transferred to and ordered it to bring this aspect into compliance with EU regulations within six months.

TikTok plans to challenge the fine as it believes that the problem that the Surveillance Service says has become irrelevant since May 2023, when it launched three data centres in Europe under the Project Clover programme.

TikTok's head of public policy in Europe, Christine Grahn, commented:

Project Clover provides some of the strictest data protection measures in the area with independent oversight by the NCC Group.

Grahn claims that TikTok has never received a request from Chinese authorities for access to European data, nor has it handed over any data.
